This information is a fair warning and to save us Filipinos visiting the US from trouble and embarrassment.

A Filipino friend shared this email. His friend who works for Homeland security as Immigration Inspector at LAX (Los Angeles International Airport ) called him to share the information that just happened. A FIL-AM citizen who was flying to the Philippines for vacation was apprehended by an Airport Immigration agent while she was checking in her baggage and going through the X-ray machine. For some reason, she was randomly checked and was told to open all the envelopes inside her carry-on Coach bag.

They found 10 envelops addressed to different people in the Philippines. When all the envelops were opened, a total of $11,000 cash was discovered. They asked the traveler if she knew the contents of the envelope. She said no, because all the envelopes are just ‘padala’ (send offs) and the senders didn’t tell her whether or not there was money inside.

Immigration agents showed her a Policy and guidance stating that it is illegal to import and export over $10,000 in any Asian countries to prevent the possibility of supporting terrorism. She was fined $500, her name was ‘red labeled’ by Immigration (which means every time she enters and exits the airport, she will be searched 100%), and she also missed her scheduled flight to the Philippines for being held almost 5
hours. Hard to believe that departing passengers from the U.S. are also subject to the policy but looks like it is being strictly enforced now.

The lessons learned is before you accept any ‘padala’, make sure the envelopes are opened and you physically saw the contents of it or just plainly say ‘sorry but I can’t accept any padala’ for your own safety.

Not only pirated VCDs/DVDs are on the hot list. Customs officials are also looking into fake bags like Louis Vuitton, Coach, etc. Please be informed that the American Association of Publishers (AAP) has also alerted the American customs officers to check out for pirated books. This information was given by Patricia Judd of the AAP.

Please warn all nursing graduates who plan to take the NCLEX and CGFNS exams in the States not to bring in these pirated books because there will be a penalty of automatic deportation as violation of intellectual property rights.

If you know anyone visiting the Philippines and coming back to the USA, with ‘pasalubongs’ (gifts) and ‘padalas,’ that are fake or pirated…

Just a friendly reminder: if you have plans of going to the U.S., please take precautionary measures on all ‘padalas,’ especially those containing fake/pirated compact discs/DVDs. US Embassy employees have been given an advisory that as US Gov’t employees, we should abide by the U.S.laws, including Intellectual Property Rights (anti-piracy) laws.

As an additional incentive, the Consular Section recently received a report that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) searched the bag of a Filipino entering the U.S. on NW 72 in Detroit.

During the search, 70-80 compact discs, 30-40 empty DVD jackets and 10-20 DVDs were found. Since the travelers were not American citizens, their visas were cancelled and they returned to the Philippines .

If they had been Americans, they could have been subject to arrest and criminal prosecution in addition to civil fines and penalties.

Please remember even ONE pirated item can jeopardize your trip. Also, the fingerprinting system has successfully been instituted in all port of entries. I suggest you bring extra identification cards in addition to your passport to facilitate your entry in the US Immigration. I hope this is helpful to you.

OK, so we didn’t even make the cut on the 15 semi-finalists in the just concluded Miss Universe 2008 Pageant. We try. We try every year…

The ones who did make it were from Venezuela, Kosovo, Mexico, Vietnam, South Africa, Australia, Japan, the Dominican Republic, Italy, Colombia, Russia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, the United States and Spain.

It was later cut down to 5 between: Venezuela, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Russia.

MISS VENEZUELA, Dayana Mendoza was crowned Ms. Universe 2008.

The National Costume Award went to Miss Gavintra Photijak of Thailand. Ms. Rebeca Moreno of El Salvador became Miss Congeniality Universe.

Yet again, MISS USA candidate falls on the evening gown competition! What is it with US gowns? Or is it jinx? Last year, Ms. USA Rachel Smith became an internet sensation when her own fall in the evening gown during the pageant was distributed all over YouTube!

My younger sister and I went to the same school, from preparatory to high school. The school was just 15 minutes away from our house so my mom would send us off to school on bikes.

LOS ANGELES, Ca. — Magandang araw po sa inyong lahat. Nawa’y nasa mabuti kayong kalagayan.

By the time na lumabas ang kolum ko na ito sa Abante at sa internet, marahil ay nasa himpapawid na po ako, kasama ang aking asawang si Jinkee at ang buong Team Pacquiao pabalik ng Pilipinas.

Wala po akong kasing-saya sa naging tagumpay ko noong Sabado ng gabi sa Las Vegas, nang aking talunin si David Diaz.

Dahil po sa tagumpay na iyon ay nalagay na naman ang ating bansang Pilipinas sa kasaysayan – sa pamamagitan po ng pag-agaw ko ng WBC lightweight crown, para maging first Filipino boxer to win the coveted title, and most of all, the very first boxer from Asia to have won four titles in four different divisions.

Alam kong napakasaya ng bawat Filipino sa naging tagumpay ko. Tulad po ng lagi kong sinasabi, ang tagumpay ko’y tagumpay ng sambayanang Pinoy. Kayo po, aking mga kababayan ang inspirasyon ko sa bawat laban, maliban sa aking pamilya at mahal sa buhay.
Hiniling ko sa inyo ang ako’y ipagdasal sa laban ko kay Diaz at iyon po ay ibinigay ninyo sa akin. Kaya naman, nagpapasalamat po ako ng lubos sa suportang inyong ibinibigay sa akin. At huwag po sana kayong magsasawang sumuporta sa mga darating ko pang laban.

Tunay pong ang bawat pagsubok at hamon ng buhay ay nangangailangan ng ibayong pagsisikap para malampasan. Ganyan po ang aking ginawa.

Hindi po ako nakuntento sa kung ano ang taglay ko na bilang isang boksingero. Kaya po, pinaunlad pa namin ng aking coaching staff ang iba ko pong arsenal gaya ng aking kanan.

Naging epektibo po ang aking kanan sa laban namin ni David, bagay na hinulaan kong hindi niya inasahan.

Dahil hindi po ako nag-kumpiyansa sa laban, sa unang round pa lamang ay ako na ang umatake. Hindi ko ibig na bigyan ng pagkakataon si David na makapagbitiw ng suntok sa akin, dahil alam kong may taglay din siyang lakas.

Nasunod din po ang fight plan namin, at iyon nga po ang gamitin ng madalas ang kanan, at kailangang ako ang magdala ng laban.
At sa tulong ng inyong dasal, nakuha po natin ang isa na namang tagumpay.

Natutuwa po ako na kahit papaano ay nakapagdulot ako ng kasiyahan sa aking mga kababayan. Lalo na sa panahong ang mga kababayan natin ay dumadanas ng kalungkutan dahil sa pag-atake ng bagyong ‘Frank,’ gayundin ang trahedya ng paglubog ng barko na MV Princess of the Stars.

Kahit man lang bahagya ay nakapagdulot ako ng kasiyahan at nabawasan ang kalungkutan ng ating mga kababayan.

Lagi ko nga rin pong sinasabi, na kung maaari lamang akong lumaban araw-araw para magkaisa tayong lahat, o makabawas ako ng problema ng ating mga kababayan ay aking gagawin.

Sa araw ng Biyernes ay nariyan na po ako sa Pilipinas. Nais kong makapag-enjoy at bigyan ng oras ang aking pamilya, lalo na ang aking tatlong anak – Jimuel, Michael at Princess – na na-miss ko ng halos dalawang buwan.

Pagtuunan ko rin ng pansin ang pagpunta sa mga lugar na sinalanta ng bagyo, para makita kung paano tayo makatulong.
Habang nasa Pilipinas ako at nagpapahinga, ipaubaya ko naman sa aking promoter ang sunod ko na laban at malalaman din po nyo dito sa kolum ang bagay na iyan.
